3. Historical Milestones

  • 1853 – BB&CI opens 1st train in India (Bombay–Thane, 34 km) – operated by GIPR then.
  • 1864 – Bombay–Baroda broad gauge line opened.
  • 1870 – Indore–Ujjain branch – 1st BG line into Central India.
  • 1951 – BB&CI merged into Indian Railways → reborn as “Western Railway” on 5 Nov.
  • 1968 – 1st 25 kV AC traction introduced Mumbai Central–Virar section.
  • 1988 – Mumbai–Delhi Rajdhani flagged; 1st Rajdhani outside Howrah–Delhi.
  • 2003 – Mumbai Metro-1 (Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar) originally planned under WR but later transferred to MMRDA.
  • 2018 – India’s 1st CNG DEMU introduced on Godhra–Kevadiya section.
  • 2022 – 100 % electrification declared; last diesel section Palanpur–Samakhiali converted.
  • 2023 – Mumbai–Gandhinagar Vande Bharat (2nd gen) clocked 160 km/h trial.

  • Vande Bharat Expansion: 3rd rake maintained at Sabarmati shed; 4 services daily (Mumbai–Gandhinagar, Mumbai–Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra via WR).
  • WDFC Integration: 1,506 km Western DFC now carries 35 % of zone’s freight; 1.5 km long double-stack containers (African & European loading gauge) run at 100 km/h.
  • Station Redevelopment: Mumbai Central, Vadodara, Ahmedabad (estimated ₹10,000 cr) – being modelled as “Railopolis” transit hubs with 60-floor commercial towers.
  • KAVACH: Mumbai–Ahmedabad section (508 km) certified for 160 km/h; 2024 target – extend to Delhi.
  • Green Initiatives: 100 % LED, 65 MW solar rooftops (Sabarmati, Dahod, Udvada); 1st H2-fuel hybrid DEMU trial planned in 2025.
  • Pink & Ladies Special: Ahmedabad division introduced “Tejaswini” all-women crewed MEMU (2023).
  • New Lines: Surendranagar–Dharangadhra–Kuda 90 km (2022), Rajkot–Porbandar doubling (2024), Mumbai–Ahmedabad HSR (508 km) – under construction; 1st pier completed in Valsad district.
